Frequently Ask Questions

How long is an eye test valid?

At Spec-Savers we recommend that you have regular eye test every 12 – 24 months. In some cases, your Spec-Savers optometrist may conduct other, more specialised eye tests such as: Field of Vision Test - used to detect blind spots, which may indicate illnesses of the eyes.

What equipment is needed to test vision?

A retinoscope is used to shine light into a patient's eye for an eye doctor to observe the reflection of the retina. The doctor moves the light back and forth across the pupil. A retinoscope is especially useful in prescribing corrective lenses for patients who are unable to give oral feedback to the eye doctor.

How is eye test calculated?

Your eye doctor will measure if you have 20/20 vision using a letter chart, also called a Snellen chart, which is posted on the wall 20 feet away from the examination chair. If you have 20/20 vision, you are able to clearly see the letters that are ⅜ of an inch (or 9 mm) in size, while sitting in the chair.

What is the validity of eye test?

To check on the evolution of your eyesight, eye specialists recommend an examination every two years. Consequently, a prescription for glasses is only valid during these two years during which the view is usually unaltered.

How long does an eye test last?

Eye testing will take different lengths of time, depending on age and complexity. In the majority of cases, an eye test will take at least 20 to 30 minutes. Your vision is precious and getting regular check-ups with your optometrist will help to protect and preserve it by helping to monitor your overall eye health.
